Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
